Technology

Adobe AIR

Adobe AIR is a cross-platform runtime that allows developers to design applications using current web technologies like Flash and HTML that run as Rich Internet Applications on the desktop. Using AIR, iAKS is able to be distributed on different operating systems from the same source code giving users the flexibility to run the application on whichever platform their project requires.

Adobe Flash

Flash is Adobe's authoring environment for rich, interactive web content. Combined with ActionScript — Flash's built-in scripting language — Flash becomes a powerful tool for developing Rich Internet Applications, perfect for the needs of iAKS.

ArchaeoML

ArchaeoML — or the Archaeological Markup Language — is a collection of XML Schemas developed by David Schloen for the OCHRE Project. The ArchaeoML standard allows iAKS to store data in an open, accessible format that can and will be used by other projects as a means of representing archaeological data. This will make iAKS data easily understood by other applications and services.

Web Services

Web services allow machines (computers) to interact with each other over a network (in this case, the Internet). Using web services, iAKS will be able to communicate with a central server to archive field data and allow other researchers to explore data from projects around the world.
